How the Acceptable Solution works

Highly Commended design by Geoff Walker, Image Architecture Ltd.
The Simple House Acceptable Solution is a streamlined framework for house design that meets industry preferences as well as the New Zealand Building Code.
With 200 pages, it is a complete, all-in-one document that covers the 25 relevant building code clauses and provides a deemed-to-comply route for the building consent process.
It is a way for architects and designers to develop affordable first homes that will appeal to a wide sector of the market and in turn drive demand for innovative, modest homes. The Simple House Acceptable Solution may be regarded as being too limited for some residential designers. However, those requiring a wider choice of materials or options than provided, may use other existing compliance documents or alternative design proposals.
The Simple House Acceptable Solution is one of the initiatives under the Government’s Better Building Blueprint package – a series of measures that will make it easier and cheaper for New Zealanders to build good quality homes and buildings.

Compliance with the Building Code can be achieved by following three easy steps:
- Working through the Acceptable Solution, noting any alterations made,
- Ensuring a home’s foundation is inspected onsite, and
- Submitting your Simple House Acceptable Solution to your local authority for approval – a process that will take days rather than weeks.
