New building practitioner board seeks members

12 Nov 2004: Applications and nominations are being sought for the Building Practitioners Board which will play a key role in the new licensing system for the building industry.

The licensing regime will be administered by the Department of Building and Housing.

A registrar will be appointed to make decisions on who can get a licence.

An independent Building Practitioners Board will be established to:

  • approve rules relating to licensed building practitioners including:
    • processes regarding licensing applications and complaints against licensed building practitioners core capabilities for licensed building practitioners
  • hear complaints about licensed building practitioners
  • hear appeals against licensing decisions by the Registrar
  • review and report to the Minister on the performance of the Board

The board will consist of between six to eight members.

It will require a mix of skills including industry expertise in design construction and inspections services, legal, dispute resolution and mediation skills and an understanding of education and training issues.

The Board will be appointed by mid-2005.

The Registrar will be appointed in 2006.

Applications close on 28 January 2005.
