Māori housing development - Te whakatipu i te whare noho Māori

There are a number of Māori Land Trusts and other Māori organisations around the country who have successfully completed housing developments such as papākainga housing for kuia and kaumatua.

As recognised in the Auditor-General’s report on Māori housing, one of the best examples of successful Māori housing development is in the Western Bay of Plenty. Here the Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Environment Bay of Plenty, Housing New Zealand Corporation, Te Puni Kōkiri, the Māori Land Court and the Western Bay of Plenty Māori Housing Forum have worked together to develop a Māori Housing Toolkit ‘Te Keteparaha Mo Nga Papakāinga’.

The toolkit breaks the development process into 5 steps. It is designed to help Māori Land Trusts achieve their aspirations to develop and build homes on multiply-owned Māori land.
