NZ Institure of Building Surveyors logo.

The Government is currently developing a programme to fast track the repair of homes suffering from the ‘leaky building’ crisis. Many homeowners appear to be holding off having their homes assessed and repaired while they wait for this scheme to be launched. It is expected therefore that there will be a significant amount of work for the building industry resulting from this programme once launched.

This course is for designers. Some concerns have been expressed around the repair of leaky buildings, in particular the gaps in the knowledge base and experience of those that are becoming involved. Members of the NZIBS have been undertaking the remediation of leaky buildings for some years and have identified what and where many of these gaps are. The aim of this course is to pass on this developed knowledge to reduce the likelihood of future repairs going wrong.

The course itself looks at the science behind moisture issues – how and why moisture moves through buildings, the identification of risk elements on buildings – where failures are likely to occur, and provide information on the repair processes for these properties.

The course is made up of seven separate modules:

  • Properties of moisture
  • Decay, fungi and moulds
  • Identification of risk elements
  • Repair process based on site investigation
  • Design principles and methodology
  • Budget setting, tender and contract documentation, recommendation
  • Contract administration and issues

The course is a full five days long.
