Is licensing for me? Roofing

If you install roofs, or roof materials for any category of building, then this is the class you should apply to be licensed in.

This includes concrete roof tiles, metal roof and wall cladding, metal roof tiles, roof membrane, liquid roof membrane, torch on roof membrane, and roof shingles and slates.

The skills and knowledge required to be licensed in this class include but are not limited to the following:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the regulatory environment of the building construction industry. This includes understanding of the purposes of the Building Act, the Building Code, the Licensed Building Practitioner Scheme, the building consent process, key roles in the design and building process and the importance of operating within your own competence.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of current roofing trade practice. This includes explaining technical roof terms, explaining current roof installation methods and trade practice, accessing and interpreting technical information, describing the work of other trades and the process of coordination and integration, describing safe working practices, personal safety requirements and environmental management on site, and describing preliminary site set-up requirements.

  • Carry out planning for roof work. This includes reading and interpreting working drawings, specifications, work programming, and schedules of quantities, preparing and/or confirming availability of site specific safety plan, confirming roof materials supply and delivery and arranging equipment.

  • Carry out roof work.

    Concrete or Clay Tile Roof. This includes working safely at all times, undertaking preparations for installation of concrete or clay tile roof, carrying out installation of concrete or clay tile roof, completing and finishing concrete or clay tile roof.

    Profiled Metal Roof and/or Wall Cladding. This includes working safely at all times, undertaking preparations for installation of profiled metal roof and/or wall cladding, carrying out installation of profiled metal roof and/or wall cladding, completing and finishing metal roof and/or wall cladding.

    Metal Tile Roof. This includes working safely at all times, undertaking preparations for installation of metal tile roof, carrying out installation of metal tile roof, completing and finishing metal tile roof.

    Roof Membrane. This includes working safely at all times, undertaking preparations for installation of roof membrane carrying out installation of roof membrane, completing and finishing roof membrane.

    Torch on Roof Membrane. This includes working safely at all times, undertaking preparations for installation of torch on roof membrane, carrying out installation of torch on roof membrane, completing and finishing torch on roof membrane.

    Liquid Membrane Work. This includes working safely at all times, undertaking preparations for installation of liquid membrane roof, carrying out installation of liquid membrane roof, completing and finishing liquid membrane roof.

    Shingle or Slate Roof. This includes working safely at all times, undertaking preparations for installation of shingle or slate roof, carrying out installation of shingle or slate roof, completing and finishing shingle or slate roof.

Area(s) of practice

You can elect to be assessed in more than one area of practice (i.e., concreate or clay tile roof, and/or profiled metal roof etc). Whether or not you elect to be assessed in more than one area of practice does not affect your licensing ID Card - it will show that you are licensed in 'Roofing'.

Once licensed you have a professional responsibility to work within your area(s) of competence.
