Building and construction taskforces established

Two taskforces have been set up following the successful Construction Leaders Forum in August 2008. One taskforce is to develop proposals to improve building and construction sector productivity, and the other is to develop strategies in support of improved urban development.

The Sector Productivity Taskforce is focusing on developing a sector-wide skills strategy, as well as improving the procurement of construction projects. It is chaired by Peter Fehl, Director Property Services, University of Auckland.

The Urban Intensification Taskforce aims to improve planning and coordination in support of improved urban development. It will look specifically at
  • determining the value proposition for increased urban intensification from a New Zealand perspective
  • understanding consumer demand and consumer resistance, and
  • facilitating successful urban intensification.

This taskforce is chaired by Richard Harris, President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and Director of Jasmax. Taskforce members are drawn from industry, local and central government. They are recognised as sector leaders and know and understand the strategic context in which the sector operates.

They have set up working groups, also drawn from industry, local and central government, to develop detailed proposals for the taskforces to consider. Administrative and logistical support is provided by a small secretariat in the Department of Building and Housing.

The taskforces first met on 11 November 2008. Both expect to complete their work by the end of March 2009, with their recommendations to go to a follow-up Construction Leaders Forum to be held by mid-2009.
