Job opportunities at the Department

A job with the Department of Building and Housing is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

Established in November 2004, the Department has responsibility for delivering important reforms across the building and housing sector. To do this we need to build our capability by continuing to attract and retain talented staff.

Our Vision is:

for a building and housing market that delivers good quality homes and buildings for New Zealanders that contribute to strong communities and a prosperous economy.

We do this by taking an important role in the building and housing sector that covers many of the ways New Zealanders interact with their homes and buildings - from design and construction to living and renting, maintaining and renovating. In bringing all these aspects together, we are responsible for:

  • making sure the laws that govern the building and housing sector are effective
  • providing good information, advice and dispute resolution services
  • working with the building and housing sector to develop better professional standards, skills and behaviours, and improving building quality
  • responding to changes in technology, design and building systems
  • providing policy advice to the Government.

Some of the ways we are doing this include:

  • leading change through the Building Act 2004 to develop a better-performing building sector
  • setting standards for New Zealand buildings
  • reviewing the law in response to changes in renting and apartment living
  • enhancing service delivery to landlords and tenants
  • developing a licensing scheme for building practitioners
  • working towards resolution of weathertightness issues
  • taking part in international forums on building construction, technologies and regulations, and housing issues.

The Department fosters a professional, practical and people-focused culture with a strong emphasis on working with others to achieve results. It is a stimulating, inclusive and family-friendly environment.
