*ARCHIVE* - BIA to review private building certifier insurance 6 Apr 2004

The Building Industry Authority said today it is initiating a review of the insurance scheme for private building certifiers.

The Building Act allows private building certifiers to provide building inspection and certification services. A scheme of insurance is required to be in place to cover their activities.

BIA chief executive John Ryan said today that issues had emerged over the last few months in terms of general cover and policy terms and conditions that meant it was appropriate to review the insurance scheme now.

"The purpose of the review is to determine whether any changes are required to the current scheme. We're looking at this now so that we can address any issues for consumers and building certifiers going forward.

"It's important to note that this review is being driven by changes in the insurance market. The BIA has confidence in the technical ability of private building certifiers."

Mr Ryan said it is expected to take three or four months to complete the review which would involve consultation with private building certifiers and other interested parties.

Mr Ryan said the BIA was confident the review would clarify any concerns around this matter and provide clear direction for the future.
