BC Update: No.56 - New masonry standard

27 February 2007: The Department has released for public consultation a proposal to cite NZS 4230: 2004 Design of Reinforced Concrete Masonry Structures in the Verification Method B1/VM1.

The Department is seeking your comments by 3 April 2007.

This proposal is a further phase of an ongoing process for updating the structural Compliance Documents.

The proposed citation will replace the 1990 edition of the same Standard.

The proposal to cite NZS 4230: 2004, including Amendment 1, encourages practice already widely adopted by the sector.   The new Standard:

  • contains updated design information on the currently available types and grades of steel reinforcement
  • allows the use of masonry compressive strengths that are 50 percent greater than was permitted by the 1990 edition
  • no longer covers burnt clay masonry (fired brick) as this is no longer a significant structural building material
  • has been developed specifically for use in conjunction with the new joint New Zealand/Australian Structural Design Actions Standards, which are also proposed for citation.  The AS/NZS 1170 consultation closes on 16 March 2007 and the NZS 4230 consultation closes on 3 April 2007.

Comments are invited from the general public, engineers, designers, industry organisations, and building users.  Details of the proposal are available on the Department’s website: www.dbh.govt.nz

Public consultation closes on 3 April 2007.  Submissions can be posted or delivered to:
