Building and Construction Sector Forum 1 August 2008

More than 60 leaders and decision makers from the building and construction sector and local and central government participated in the Building and Construction Sector Forum hosted by Hon Shane Jones, Minister for Building and Construction on Friday 1 August 2008.

Copies of the papers produced for the Forum and slide presentations are listed below.

Background

The Forum provided an opportunity for industry, and local and central government leaders to discuss the significance and implications of the big issues facing the sector, and its future direction. The goals of the Forum were to:

  • start building a shared understanding of the big picture context and the  implications for the sector
  • get some high level agreement of the big issues for the sector
  • agree on how we can best work together over time to address the big issues, including possible engagement mechanisms.

The focus of discussion was on: sector performance and productivity; areas for further regulatory reform; and urban intensification and what this means for the way sustainable cities and communities are designed and built.

February 2009 update

Two taskforces were set up following the successful Building and Construction Sector Forum in August 2008.

The Sector Productivity Taskforce focused on improving building and construction sector productivity by developing a sector-wide skills strategy, as well as improving the procurement of construction projects. It was chaired by Peter Fehl, Director Property Services, University of Auckland.

The Urban Intensification Taskforce aimed to improve planning and coordination in support of improved urban development. This taskforce was chaired by Richard Harris, President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and Director of Jasmax. Working groups to support the work of the taskforces met on 27 and 28 January 2009 and 4 February (Productivity) and 5 February (Urban Intensification).
